Brodmann ’ s Brain Mapping and Multiple Realization

چکیده

Some forty years ago, Hilary Putnam offered the speculative empirical hypothesis that psychological states are multiply realized in brain states. With the subsequent explosive growth in neuroscientific research, it is only natural that philosophers have begun to examine Putnam's empirical speculation in the light of this research. 1 To meet the restrictions of a short conference presentation, I will consider one component of this recent attention. William Bechtel and Jennifer Mundale (1997, 1999), have suggested that Brodmann's brain mapping research challenges Putnam's hypothesis. I find, however, that this research does not have the dire consequences for multiple realization that Bechtel and Mundale allege. The centerpiece of Bechtel and Mundale's treatment of brain mapping and multiple realization is the following argument: Two aspects of these [neuroanatomical] practices will be especially noteworthy: (1) the appeal to function, especially psychological function, is an essential part of both the project and its tools, and (2) the cartographic project itself is frequently carried out comparatively–across species. For multiple realization to be a serious option, brain taxonomy would have to be carried out both independently of psychological function, and without comparative evaluation across species In order to make a relatively simple paper that fits within the confines of a conference presentation, I propose to refine Bechtel and Mundale's central argument to the following: 1. If multiple realization of psychological function were true, then neuroanatomy would have to be carried out independently of psychological function and without comparative evaluation across species. 2. Neuroanatomy cannot be carried out independently of psychological function. 3. Neuroanatomy uses comparative evaluation across species. ===

Architectonic Mapping of the Human Brain beyond Brodmann

Brodmann has pioneered structural brain mapping. He considered functional and pathological criteria for defining cortical areas in addition to cytoarchitecture. Starting from this idea of structural-functional relationships at the level of cortical areas, we will argue that the cortical architecture is more heterogeneous than Brodmann's map suggests. A triple-scale concept is proposed that incl...

Local tissue damage assessed with statistical mapping analysis of brain magnetization transfer ratio: relationship with functional status of patients in the earliest stage of multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE In the early stage of Multiple Sclerosis (MS), conventional MR imaging parameters such as T2 lesion load fail to explain the clinical status of patients. In the present work, we aimed to determine the ability of magnification transfer imaging to better reflect the relationship between local tissue damage and functional status of MS patients. METHODS We performed a compa...

Neuroanatomical correlates of phonological processing of Chinese characters and alphabetic words: a meta-analysis.

We used the activation likelihood estimation (ALE) method to quantitatively synthesize data from 19 published brain mapping studies of phonological processing in reading, six with Chinese and 13 with alphabetic languages. It demonstrated high concordance of cortical activity across multiple studies in each written language system as well as significant differences of activation likelihood betwe...

Abnormal resting state corticolimbic blood flow in depressed unmedicated patients with major depression: a (15)O-H(2)O PET study.

We investigated the differences in the resting state corticolimbic blood flow between 20 unmedicated depressed patients and 21 healthy comparisons. Resting state cerebral blood flow (CBF) was measured with H(2)(15)O PET. Anatomical MRI scans were performed on an Elscint 1.9 T Prestige system for PET-MRI coregistration. Significant changes in cerebral blood flow indicating neural activity were d...

Brain activation during semantic judgment of Chinese sentences: A functional MRI study.

A functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study was conducted to investigate whether the anatomic substrates of semantic memory may reflect categorical organization and to determine whether the left middle frontal gyrus (Brodmann area [BA] 9) plays a role in Chinese semantic judgment. Unlike previous studies using a word-retrieval task (e.g., word generation, naming, and word categorizatio...
